Know When and How to Sell Your Company

At some point in your career as an entrepreneur, particularly if you are one of the so-called serial ones who love starting them up one after the other only to sell them off (at a tidy profit, of course), there will come a time when you wonder whether you should sell your company and if you ought to hire the services of a professional broker specializing in such transactions. It may seem like something you can handle on your own – after all, you’re a businessman (or woman); you know all about buying and selling – but there’s nothing like the proverbial steady hand at the helm that comes from those who have, so to speak, seen it all before.

Such people butter their bread selling companies just like yours, often on a regular basis. You generally can’t do better than having such experts sell your company for you, freeing you up to pursue other worthwhile activities – such as starting up your next business!

But there’s a lot to be said for doing things yourself, too, of course. Most obviously, you do save on the commission. This fact is especially important if your company isn’t too successful! Things could still be in the red in such cases, even after a sale, never mind any broker’s fees!

If you are determined to sell your company yourself, do keep in mind two important points: first, avoid any delays if at all possible. You want to close a good deal fast! It may seem an obvious matter, especially to a businessman or woman, but many do forget that good deals are rare while waiting for the “best” deal can take forever! Just as obviously but equally important, be prepared. Delays can happen for any reason – just be sure it’s not anything you have control over. It would be very bad to lose out due to your own unpreparedness.
